Blue Cross of California is currently engaged in discussions to renegotiate the terms of its hospital agreements with John Muir Medical Center/Walnut Creek and John Muir/Mt. Diablo Medical Center. The contract termination date has been extended to midnight, November 30, 2006. Negotiations with the hospitals are continuing and Blue Cross is hopeful that the negotiations will be successful and new contracts will be signed.

If Blue Cross and the hospitals are unable to reach agreement, treatment pre-authorized by Blue Cross prior to November 30, 2006 will be treated as in-network for purposes of benefit calculation but the PPO rates will no longer be in effect; as a result, you may experience a serious financial impact. Plan provisions limit coverage to usual, reasonable and customary charges only and you will be responsible for any overages in addition to the non-network deductible and coinsurance.

If you are scheduled for treatment at John Muir Medical Center, you should consider an alternative facility for treatment after November 30, 2006. San Ramon Regional Medical Center, Alta Bates Hospital and Children's Hospital of Oakland are a few PPO hospitals in the area which remain in the preferred provider network. Financial hardship on your family will be greatly reduced when services are received from an in-network PPO hospital. You can obtain a current list of all participating providers on the Blue Cross website, www.bluecrossca.com. Please discuss this situation with your doctor and reschedule planned procedures at a network hospital.
